exocad multi-die workflow

Why project-named coping files slow down a multi-die workflow

A completed multi-die case can contain several coping STL exports whose filenames share a project name and differ mainly by position. The useful description for each die may already be in the project—but not obvious in File Explorer.

What makes the files difficult to read?

In a normal busy laboratory folder, an export such as exocad Project Name-101-coping_cad.stl tells you it is a completed coping file, but not necessarily which person or work item the die represents. When several positions are exported together, reading every filename and matching it manually to the tray adds a small but repeated interruption to the workflow.

That is a naming problem, not a geometry problem. The STL remains the same mesh. The aim is simply to give the file a name that is meaningful when the tray is no longer open in front of you.

Use information already present in the case

Multi-Dies Renamed reads a selected completed .dentalProject and matches supported -coping_cad.stl exports to the descriptions entered for each multi-die position. A clear result can look like 1 - Dr Smith - J Jones.stl. The example is fictional: your filenames use your own position descriptions and selected filename fields.

The app is independent software, not an exocad plugin. It does not design restorations or change STL geometry. Always verify the final filename and the file itself before manufacture.

A practical file-naming checklist

  1. Finish the supported multi-die coping exports and keep the completed project file in the same case folder.
  2. Check that the die-position names are meaningful before processing.
  3. Select or drag the .dentalProject into Multi-Dies Renamed.
  4. Check the live filename preview and choose the fields you need.
  5. Rename the supported exports, then use History if you ever need to restore the earlier names and locations.

Keep originals—or rename in place

Some laboratories prefer numbered source files moved into Original Files; others prefer to rename those source STL files in place while leaving every other item in the folder untouched. Multi-Dies Renamed offers both choices and retains a rolling History for reversal. It processes the selected case locally on the Windows PC.
