Clear STL file naming for multi-die coping cases

A good filename lets the person opening a completed export identify it quickly without changing the CAD file itself. For a multi-die coping case, position number and the description already attached to that position are often the most useful starting point.

What should a coping STL filename answer?

For daily hand-off and production work, a filename should make clear which position it belongs to and which description was assigned to that die. It should remain readable in File Explorer, in a CAM queue and when files are copied to a production folder. It should not pretend to replace the case record, clinical checks or geometry verification.

A simple pattern such as 1 - Dr Smith - J Jones.stl is usually easier to scan than a project-wide export name with only a changing number. The exact text must come from the laboratory’s own project data; fictional examples on this site are only examples.

Keep the workflow reversible

Automation should not mean losing control. Before renaming files, preview the result. Keep the original numbered sources in an Original Files folder when that suits your process, or rename the matched source STLs in place while leaving every other case-folder item unchanged. A retained conversion history gives you a way back if the chosen filename layout was not right.

Choose only the filename fields you need

Multi-Dies Renamed lets you arrange die number, multi-die name, project name, material and date into a single live preview. More text is not automatically better: use the fields that genuinely help your team identify the file. Consistency across cases matters more than a long filename.

Use this check before production

  1. Confirm the completed project file is readable.
  2. Confirm the supported coping exports end with -coping_cad.stl.
  3. Confirm the die-position descriptions are correct.
  4. Review the live output preview.
  5. After renaming, verify the filenames and STL geometry before manufacture.

A focused Windows tool for one repeated task

Multi-Dies Renamed is a local Windows utility for supported completed exocad multi-die coping exports. It does not upload case geometry, require a separate account or edit STL geometry. You can select a project from File Explorer or drag it into the clearly marked case selector.
